Lombok is the answer for the group that loves the idea of Bali but wants more room to breathe. It has the same warm water and rice-terrace green, minus the gridlock - and it adds Mount Rinjani, a 3,726m volcano with a crater lake that is one of the great treks in Southeast Asia. The trekkers get a proper summit mission; everyone else gets the islands.
And the islands are the trick that makes it work for a mixed crew. The three Gilis sit a short boat ride off the coast: no cars, turtles on the snorkel, and a sunset-bean-bag scene that needs zero effort. So the ambitious half of the group disappears up the mountain for a couple of nights while the rest float, surf the south-coast breaks, and learn to cook a Sasak curry - then everyone re-groups over satay.
For a mixed group
Rinjani is a guided multi-day trek, so plan around it: lock the trek dates, give the climbers an island recovery day after, and keep the non-trekkers busy on the Gilis and the south coast meanwhile.

Travel FAQ
Is Lombok really quieter than Bali?
Yes, noticeably. Same warm seas and green hills, far fewer crowds and less traffic. It's a short flight or fast boat from Bali, so some groups pair the two - busy Bali first, then decompress on Lombok.
How hard is the Rinjani trek?
It's a serious two or three-day climb with steep ascents and altitude, but it's guided with porters who carry camp and food. Reasonable fitness and broken-in boots are enough; the summit push is the tough part.
What do non-trekkers do while others climb?
Loads. The Gili islands have turtle snorkelling and sunset bars, the south coast has surf and empty beaches, and there are waterfalls, weaving villages and cooking classes. The group splits and re-joins easily.
When should we go?
May to October is the dry season - best for trekking, clearer seas and reliable surf. The Rinjani trail usually closes in the wet months and during the rainy peak, so plan the climb for the dry window.
Can beginners surf here?
Definitely. Selong Belanak is a gentle, sandy-bottom bay made for first lessons, while reef breaks like Mawi keep the experienced crew happy. Schools rent boards and run group lessons cheaply.
How many days do we need?
Six works for islands and surf without the big trek; nine lets the climbers do Rinjani and still share beach days with everyone. We never handle your money - you pay guides and operators directly.
Written by Manta from operator briefings and traveller reports. Double-check trek closures, boat schedules and seasonal details before you book - things change, and we'll keep this current.
