Koh Tao made its name as the cheapest, friendliest place on earth to get scuba certified, and that reputation still holds. A whole group can do their Open Water course together over a long weekend, then spend the rest of the week diving, snorkelling and arguing about which viewpoint is best. It's a small island that runs almost entirely on diving - which means the price is low and the standard is high.
But it isn't only for divers. The non-divers get jungle viewpoints over impossibly turquoise bays, the Koh Nang Yuan sandbar, cheap and brilliant Thai food, and a beach-bar scene on Sairee that pulls everyone back together at night. It's the kind of place where the group splits for an afternoon dive and the hammock crowd genuinely doesn't mind.

Why is Koh Tao so good for learning to dive?
It has warm, calm, shallow training bays, a huge number of dive schools competing on price, and a house-reef setup that makes the Open Water course cheap, fast and beginner-friendly.
Can non-divers still have a great week?
Absolutely. Koh Nang Yuan, jungle viewpoints like John-Suwan, snorkel bays, cheap Thai food and the Sairee beach-bar scene mean the non-divers are never short of things to do.
When's the best time to visit?
March to September generally brings the calmest seas and best visibility. October to December is the wetter, windier monsoon window, though it's still divable on many days.
How do we actually get there?
Fly into Koh Samui or Surat Thani, then take a ferry (roughly 1.5-3 hours). Book the same crossing so the group arrives together and shares the transfer to your base.
Cash or card?
Bring Thai baht for street food, bars and scooters; ATMs exist but charge fees. Dive schools take cards. We never handle your money - you pay schools and operators directly.
How many days do we need?
Five works for a no-dive island week; six gives a group time to complete an Open Water course together and still enjoy a boat day and the beaches without rushing.
