Ningaloo is the world's largest fringing reef, which means the postcard stuff is genuinely just there - you wade off the beach and the coral starts at your knees. It is also one of the very few places on Earth where you can reliably snorkel alongside whale sharks, and the manta rays that give this whole site its spirit hang around all year. For a Manta crew, this is the home reef.
What makes it work for a group is the range of intensity. One day you're on a spotter-plane boat dropping in beside a seven-metre whale shark; the next you're drifting Turquoise Bay with a coffee in the car, or hiking a red gorge in Cape Range. The big-ticket animal encounters and the do-nothing beach days share the same little base town, so the crew can dial it up or down by the day.
For a mixed group
Whale-shark boats are small and book out, so plan as one group: reserve the boat days together, base in Exmouth, and pad the calendar with beach drifts and gorge days that anyone can join.

Travel FAQ
When can we swim with whale sharks?
The reliable window runs roughly March to August, when whale sharks gather after the coral spawn. Tours are licensed and capped, so book your boat day early and as a group to keep everyone on the same departure.
Are the mantas really there year-round?
Yes. Unlike the seasonal whale sharks, Ningaloo's reef mantas are around all year, mostly off Coral Bay. A dedicated manta swim is the one big-animal day you can plan with confidence whatever the month.
Do non-snorkellers have things to do?
Plenty. Cape Range National Park has red gorges, lookouts and wildlife, plus there are beaches, a few good cafes and the option to ride along on boats and watch from the deck if the water isn't their thing.
How do we get there?
Fly into Exmouth (Learmonth) from Perth - it's the simplest option for a group. The long drive up from Perth is a road trip in itself if you have time, but flying saves two big days.
Exmouth or Coral Bay?
Exmouth has the airport, Navy Pier diving and Cape Range; Coral Bay is tiny, walkable and best for easy lagoon snorkelling and mantas. Groups often base in Exmouth and day-trip down to Coral Bay.
How many days do we need?
Five covers the headline swims and a gorge day; seven lets a mixed group add diving and slow beach days without rushing. We never handle your money - you pay the operators directly.
Written by Manta from operator briefings and traveller reports. Double-check whale-shark dates, permits and tides before you book - things change, and we'll keep this current.
