Why go

Komodo is a national park you explore by boat, and that's exactly what makes it so good for a group. You charter a vessel out of Labuan Bajo, sleep to the slap of water on the hull, and wake up somewhere different every day - a dragon-walk one morning, a manta cleaning station the next, a sunrise hike up Padar after that. Everyone's days are stitched together, but each person gets their own thing.

Below the surface it's serious: nutrient-rich currents pull in mantas, sharks and big schools, and the drift dives are some of the best in Indonesia. Above it, the islands are pure drama - golden savannah hills, that famous three-bay Padar viewpoint, and a literal Pink Beach to flop on. The diver, the wildlife nerd and the hammock person all leave smug.

For a mixed group

Chartering one boat for the crew is the move - you control the route, divers and non-divers split for the morning, and everyone re-joins for the viewpoint and sunset deck.

Travel FAQ

Do we need to charter a boat, or can we day-trip?
Both work. Day trips from Labuan Bajo cover Padar, dragons and Pink Beach; chartering a boat for the crew lets you reach the best dive sites and sleep on the water between them.
Is it safe to walk near the Komodo dragons?
Yes, with a park ranger - they're mandatory on every walk and keep a safe distance. The dragons are wild and can move fast, so always follow your ranger's instructions.
Do you need to dive, or is snorkelling enough?
Snorkelling is excellent - Manta Point, Pink Beach and the sandbars are all snorkellable. Divers get the famous currents and pinnacles, but non-divers are far from left out.
When should a group go?
The dry season, April to October, brings the calmest seas and best visibility. Manta sightings are reliable year-round, but the shoulder months balance good conditions with fewer crowds.
Is there a park fee?
Yes - a national-park entry and conservation fee is paid per person, usually arranged by your operator or boat. Budget for it; it funds ranger patrols and dragon protection.
Is the diving suitable for beginners?
Some sites have strong currents and suit advanced divers, but operators run gentler reefs and manta dives for newer divers too. Be honest about your level when booking the boat.
