Raja Ampat sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle, and the numbers are almost silly: more fish and coral species here than anywhere else on the planet. But the reason a group falls for it isn't the statistics - it's that everyone finds their thing. The diver gets manta cleaning stations and current-swept walls; the hammock person gets a homestay jetty over impossibly clear water and absolutely nothing to do.
It rewards a slow, boat-led rhythm. You base somewhere, take day trips out to the sites and viewpoints, and let the tide decide the order. That structure is forgiving for a mixed crew - the dive boat leaves at dawn for those who want it, and the rest of the group surfaces for breakfast, a snorkel and a long lunch.
For a mixed group
It's remote and boat-dependent, so it pays to plan as one group: shared transfers, one base, a flexible day plan that splits and re-joins.

Travel FAQ
How does a group actually get there?
Fly into Sorong (via Jakarta, Makassar or Manado), then the public ferry to Waisai (~2 hrs). Coordinate one arrival day so the group rides transfers together - it’s much cheaper and simpler.
Do you need to be a certified diver?
No. There’s world-class snorkelling straight off the jetties, plus viewpoints, villages and wildlife. Mixed crews work well - divers do dawn boats, everyone else has a slower morning.
When is manta season?
Reef mantas are around year-round but most reliable October-April, which also brings the calmest seas. That’s the window most groups target.
Is there a conservation fee?
Yes - a marine-park permit (paid locally) funds reef protection and local communities. Budget for it per person; your homestay or operator can sort it on arrival.
Card or cash?
Bring enough cash. ATMs are limited to Waisai and unreliable; most homestays and boats are cash-only. We never handle your money - you pay operators directly.
How many days do we need?
Five is the realistic minimum given the travel; seven lets a mixed group split and re-join without anyone feeling rushed.
Written by Manta from operator briefings and traveller reports. Double-check seasonal details and permits before you book - things change, and we’ll keep this current.
