Sankisan Maru

Best time to dive

January to December; December to April; July to October

Certification & difficulty

Advanced Open Water - advanced conditions (currents/depth); dive within your training.

Snorkelling

Snorkel-friendly - Marginal - the shallowest deck is ~15 m, so freediving only for the fit; not a casual snorkel.

Safety notes

Serious dive: many holds contain live munitions and ordnance - do not touch or disturb. Wreck penetration is an overhead environment (silt-out, entanglement, entrapment risk) and the wrecks are war graves to be treated with respect. Remote location - factor in evacuation/chamber access and dive conservatively. CATALOG NOTE: the catalog seed ('stern upright at 48 m crater edge') conflicts with the sources, which place the Sankisan Maru at about 15-30 m with her stern/aft third destroyed by the bomb that detonated her ordnance-filled holds. Treat the site as a ~15-30 m wreck with a blown-off stern, not a 48 m wreck; verify before use.

Permits & fees

Chuuk State dive/wreck permit and fees apply, arranged through the operator. The wrecks are protected war graves and historic sites - penetration is allowed but removing or disturbing artifacts or remains is prohibited. Confirm current fees and rules before booking.

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.
