Whirl Rocks

Best time to dive

April to October; September to November; November to January

What you might see

  • NudibranchLikely

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Certification & difficulty

Advanced Open Water - advanced conditions (currents/depth); dive within your training.

Snorkelling

Not a snorkel site - Not typically a snorkel site itself (rocky gullies, boat-only access) but Farne Islands grey-seal snorkelling is very popular nearby at shallower haul-out reefs (e.g. Longstone/Knoxes Reef) - many operators run dedicated seal snorkel trips from Seahouses

Safety notes

Strong tidal streams outside slack water windows; cold water year-round; exposed offshore location requiring good boat cover; busy area for dive boats and tourist boats; avoid harassing/touching seals (bites possible if provoked)

Permits & fees

No dive permit required (not a protected wreck); Farne Islands are a National Trust nature reserve - follow seal-interaction codes of conduct

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.
