Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.
Certification & difficulty
Advanced Open Water - advanced conditions (currents/depth); dive within your training.
Snorkelling
Not a snorkel site - Limited - surface snorkeling/ride-along possible on calm days per some operators, but the wall itself is a scuba dive; snorkeling and diving here draw comparisons to Molokini off Maui
Safety notes
Long open-ocean crossing, strong/unpredictable current on exposed wall sections, remoteness/limited emergency response, protected Hawaiian monk seals present. Lehua Island itself is a State Wildlife Sanctuary/seabird colony - landing on the island is prohibited without a DLNR permit; divers must stay in the water below the high-tide line and not set foot on the islet
Permits & fees
No permit needed to dive the surrounding waters, but landing on Lehua Island requires a DLNR permit and is otherwise prohibited to protect the seabird sanctuary (17 seabird species, restored after 2021 rat eradication); Niihau itself remains private property with no public access
Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.
Location
Nearest hub: Niihau (via Kauai charter)
