Montague Island Seals and Penguins

The encounter

Species / spectacle: Australian and New Zealand fur seals (colony swelling between late winter and early December), the states largest little penguin colony, and over 90 bird species. Migrating whales June to November and the endangered grey nurse shark are also possible.

How you see it: boat/snorkel

Typical duration: Snorkel-with-seals trips run roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours including a short boat transfer each way. Combined island landing and lighthouse tours add time; penguin evening tours are separate.

When to go

Spring to early summer for peak seal numbers and clear water; little penguin island tours typically run September to January. Fur seal colony peaks mid-spring.

Seals reliable year-round with numbers highest late winter to early December (hundreds to a couple of thousand). Penguins best September to January; whales June to November. (Confirm.)

Best time of day: Morning departures common for calmer seas and clearer snorkelling water. Penguin viewing is at dusk on dedicated evening tours.

Migrating humpback and southern right whales June to November, little penguins returning to burrows at dusk in the warmer months, and occasional grey nurse shark sightings offshore.

Physical demand: Open-ocean snorkelling in cool water with swell and current demands confident swimming and comfort in deep water. The boat transfer can be bumpy; island landings involve steps and uneven tracks.

Accessibility & group fit: Suited to reasonably fit adults and older children who can swim; not ideal for non-swimmers or those with limited mobility. Wetsuit, mask, snorkel and fins are provided by operators.

Options for a mixed group: Small-group charter vessels; snorkel groups are kept small and supervised by guides. Non-snorkellers can stay aboard or join island-only or whale/wildlife cruise options.

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: Barunguba Montague Island Nature Reserve landing is by licensed guided tour only; NSW National Parks lists free park entry. Tour and snorkel fees apply per operator. (Confirm.)

Guide / crew: Licensed commercial tour operator and crew required; independent landing is not permitted. Guides handle safety briefings, gear fitting and in-water supervision.

Access is tightly managed to protect seabird and seal breeding; do not touch or chase wildlife and follow guide instructions in the water. The island holds cultural significance to the Yuin people.

Cold water, swell, currents and boat motion are the main hazards; grey nurse sharks are present but generally non-aggressive. Follow crew directions and stay with the group.

Weather / conditions: Trips are weather-dependent and cancelled in strong wind or heavy swell. Cool water year-round; seasickness possible on the crossing.

Marine Rescue and emergency services cover the area; call 000 in emergencies. Crews carry safety equipment and monitor conditions.

Getting there & staying

Access logistics: Reach Narooma by road, about 5 hours south of Sydney, then join a chartered boat for the roughly 25 minute crossing. Book tours and accommodation via the Narooma visitor centre or operators.

Accommodation / camping: Heritage lighthouse keepers cottage stays are available on the island via NSW National Parks. Narooma town offers hotels, motels and holiday parks on the mainland.

Gear / water / connectivity: Operators supply wetsuits, mask, snorkel and fins; bring a towel, warm layers and sun protection. Phone reception is limited offshore.

Facilities: Mainland facilities at Narooma wharf and town; the island itself has limited visitor facilities centred on the lightstation precinct. Toilets and parking at the departure point.

Crowds / solitude: Popular in peak season with multiple daily departures, but group sizes are capped and the reserve limits numbers. Shoulder seasons are quieter.
