Best time of day: Across daylight once the spotter plane is up; no documented optimal hour.
Trigger: mass coral spawn ~7-10 days after the March/April full moon drives the plankton bloom that draws the sharks.
Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Physical demand: Open-ocean surface snorkelling, repeated water entries and short finning bursts to keep pace, sometimes in swell/chop. Wetsuits, pool noodles, life jackets, tow-ropes provided; in-water guide tows a rescue float.
Accessibility & group fit: Must swim unassisted and be medically fit; strong-swimmer not required. Operators cater to nervous/first-timers. Min age varies by operator (some from ~4; under 6 usually not permitted to swim unless experienced). Reported guest ages 4-80.
Options for a mixed group: Strong, first-class split. Confident swimmers take timed turns swimming with the shark (max 10 in water); nervous or non-swimming members buy an Observer ticket - stay on the boat, view from deck, and do the calmer inner-reef snorkel/kayak.
Permits & responsible travel
Regulation / permits / fees: Licensed operators only - DBCA (WA Parks and Wildlife) licenses a capped number of whale-shark operators (~15, Confirm.).
