The encounter

Species / spectacle: Up to eight shark species - bull, tiger, sicklefin lemon, silvertip, grey reef, whitetip reef, blacktip reef and tawny nurse - alongside dense reef-fish aggregations drawn to the bait.

Typical duration: Two-tank half-day boat trip; combined bottom time roughly 30-45 min across the deep and shallow feeds plus a surface interval and short boat transit.

When to go

Diveable year-round; drier, calmer months generally give better surface conditions and visibility. Tiger shark presence varies through the year.

Bull sharks are reliably present year-round because of provisioning, while tiger sharks are more sporadic. Confirm month-by-month odds with the operator (Confirm.).

Best time of day: Morning departures are standard, aligning with the feeding schedule and typically calmer early seas.

Tiger shark appearances peak in certain months (Confirm.); largest bull-shark numbers coincide with the established feeding routine.

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Difficulty (1-5): 4 (moderate)

Physical demand: The deep phase to around 30m demands solid buoyancy, air management and comfort at depth; divers kneel behind a coral barrier while feeders work. Mild current can be present.

Accessibility & group fit: Minimum Open Water certification required, with the PADI Scuba Diver level not sufficient; unsuitable for snorkelers or non-divers. Nitrox is available to extend no-decompression time.

Options for a mixed group: Divers are lined up behind the barrier arena and managed by multiple safety divers. Confirm specific maximum group size with the operator (Confirm.).

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: A compulsory marine-park levy of about FJD 25 per day funds village communities and reserve wardens, charged on top of dive fees. The reserve status protects the site from fishing.

Guide / crew: Professional dive guides plus dedicated safety divers and feeders are required; independent diving is not permitted within the reserve.

The provisioned bull-shark feed runs on a conservation-levy model funding local villages, wardens and mangrove planting. Provisioning welfare and behaviour-change remain debated; meta-analyses report no demonstrated rise in shark bites at feeding sites, though effects are case-dependent.

Safety & hazards

Large apex predators at close range, depth-related narcosis and decompression risk, plus boat and current hazards; strict adherence to the briefing is essential.

Weather / conditions: Wind and swell can cause surface chop and reduce visibility, and trips may cancel in rough weather. Current at depth is possible.

Hyperbaric care at Pacific Specialist Healthcare in Nadi and the CWM/Suva hyperbaric unit; DAN dive insurance is strongly advised. Suva medical facilities are within reach.

Getting there & staying

Access logistics: Boats depart Pacific Harbour on Viti Levu, roughly 45 min by road from Nadi or Suva, with a short boat run out to the reserve.

Accommodation / camping: A range of resorts and hotels at Pacific Harbour and the nearby Coral Coast, plus Beqa Lagoon Resort on Beqa Island. No camping at the dive site.

Gear / water / connectivity: Full scuba gear rental via the dive operators, with Nitrox available. Mobile coverage exists along the Viti Levu coast but is limited offshore.

Facilities: PADI dive centres at Pacific Harbour provide boats, gear and briefing areas, with resort amenities nearby.

Crowds / solitude: A signature Fiji dive; multiple operators can share the arena, so expect other divers rather than solitude.
