Tanjung Puting Orangutans

The encounter

Species / spectacle: Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) at feeding platforms and wild; also proboscis monkeys, gibbons, macaques, hornbills, kingfishers, monitor lizards and estuarine crocodiles along the river.

Typical duration: 2-4 day / 1-3 night klotok cruise is standard; day trips possible but rushed.

When to go

Dry season (roughly June-September) is best for river travel, drier trails and comfort; orangutans visible year-round but wet season brings heavy rain.

High year-round at feeding platforms every month; wild forest sightings improve in the drier months.

Best time of day: Feeding times structure visits - Pondok Tanggui around 09:00, Camp Leakey around 14:00, Tanjung Harapan around 15:00; early morning and dusk best for other wildlife along the river.

During wild-fruit fruiting periods orangutans forage in the forest and may skip feeding platforms, making platform sightings less certain but wild encounters more natural.

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Physical demand: Mostly relaxed boat travel; short 10-30 min walks or boardwalks to feeding platforms in humid heat; minimal fitness required.

Accessibility & group fit: Family-friendly and suits mixed ages; not wheelchair accessible due to boat boarding and jungle boardwalks.

Options for a mixed group: Klotoks are chartered per boat, typically carrying 2-6 guests plus crew; larger parties use multiple boats travelling together.

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: Managed by Balai TN Tanjung Puting under KLHK; a licensed local guide is mandatory and entry / conservation fees apply with separate foreign and domestic tariffs plus possible camera fees (Confirm.). Feeding platforms are supported by Orangutan Foundation International.

Guide / crew: Certified national-park guide is compulsory; klotok crew typically includes a captain / boatman and a cook.

Keep well back (roughly 7 m) from orangutans, never feed or touch them, no flash; wear a mask if unwell (disease transmission risk to apes); avoid single-use plastics on the river.

Permits, fees and quotas change - confirm before booking.

Safety & hazards

Estuarine crocodiles inhabit the river (do not swim); heat exhaustion and mosquito-borne disease (malaria / dengue) risk.

Weather / conditions: Heavy tropical rain, intense heat and humidity, mosquitoes; low water on the upper Sekonyer late in the dry season can slow boats.

Remote setting with limited rescue capacity; nearest hospital is in Pangkalan Bun, several hours downriver by boat and road.

Getting there & staying

Access logistics: Fly to Pangkalan Bun (Iskandar airport, PKN), transfer by road to Kumai port, then board a klotok up the Sekonyer river to the feeding camps.

Accommodation / camping: Sleep on the klotok deck (mattress plus mosquito net) or at riverside lodges such as Rimba Ecolodge; no camping in the forest.

Gear / water / connectivity: Bring insect repellent, sun protection, light long clothing and drinking water; phone signal is weak to absent upriver in the park.

Facilities: Basic - klotoks carry a simple toilet and cook meals aboard; ranger posts and boardwalks at the feeding camps.

Crowds / solitude: Feeding platforms can be crowded with tour groups in peak dry season; the river itself is generally tranquil.

Nearby operators / hubs: Pangkalan Bun and Kumai are the hubs with many klotok operators and guides.
