Blue Corner

HIGH confidencepelagic current dive

Also known as: Palau's signature wall

Current-swept plateau drawing grey reef sharks, jacks and pelagics

The encounter

Species / spectacle: Grey reef and whitetip sharks in numbers, schooling jacks, barracuda, snapper and occasional turtles cruising the reef edge. Big-fish density is the draw.

How you see it: dive

Typical duration: One dive of roughly 40-50 min including hook-in time, run from Koror or a liveaboard (Confirm.).

When to go

Diveable year-round; drier season roughly Nov-Apr brings best visibility and conditions (Confirm.).

Sharks and pelagics reliable year-round given the constant nutrient-rich current (Confirm.).

Best time of day: Timed to incoming or favourable current rather than clock; guides plan dives around tide (Confirm.).

Spawning aggregations and heightened big-fish action occur seasonally around certain moon phases (Confirm.).

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Who it suits

Difficulty (1-5): 4 (high)

Physical demand: Negative or fast descent into current, reef-hook deployment at around 15-25 m and controlled hover, then drift. Good buoyancy, air management and current experience required.

Accessibility & group fit: For certified divers with drift and advanced experience; not for beginners, snorkelers or nervous divers. Reef hook use is expected.

Options for a mixed group: Guides split divers into small pods along the hook-in line by air consumption and experience (Confirm.).

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: Within Koror State waters requiring a Rock Islands or dive permit; Palau is a shark sanctuary banning shark fishing (Confirm.). Fees additional to dive charter.

Guide / crew: Mandatory experienced local divemaster who briefs current, hook technique and exit; solo diving not appropriate.

Hook only into dead reef or rubble, never live coral; maintain distance from sharks, no touching or feeding. Reef-safe sunscreen required under Palau law (Confirm.).

Permits, fees and quotas change - confirm before booking.

Safety & hazards

Down-currents and being swept off the plateau, rapid depth changes, shark proximity. Reef hook mishandling can damage coral or the diver.

Weather / conditions: Strong variable currents including down-currents; surface chop on windy days affects the boat run. Visibility usually good.

Palau has a recompression chamber in Koror; operators carry oxygen and first aid (Confirm.). Evacuation is by boat to Koror.

Getting there & staying

Access logistics: Boat from Koror to the Ngemelis area, roughly 45-90 min, or via liveaboard (Confirm.).

Accommodation / camping: No site lodging; divers base in Koror or aboard liveaboards.

Gear / water / connectivity: Full scuba kit plus reef hook and gloves for hooking; SMB advised. No connectivity at site.

Facilities: None at the dive site; services are on the boat and back in Koror.

Crowds / solitude: One of Palau's most dived sites; multiple boats may share it at peak times, easing off-season.

Operators & guiding

Nearby operators / hubs: Koror hub with many day-boat and liveaboard operators serving Ngemelis sites.

Guided trips / outfitters: Sam's Tours, Fish n Fins and Palau Dive Adventures run Blue Corner dives; Sam's offers a Blue Corner specialty course (Confirm.).
