The encounter

Species / spectacle: Reef manta rays visiting cleaning stations, plus grey reef sharks, schooling fish and cleaner wrasse. Manta cleaning and feeding is the spectacle.

How you see it: dive

Typical duration: One dive of roughly 40-50 min on the plateau, often paired with other Ngemelis sites (Confirm.).

When to go

Peak manta season roughly Dec-Mar during plankton blooms; drier season overall gives best visibility (Confirm.).

Mantas most reliable and numerous Dec-Mar with reports of many individuals; present but fewer other months (Confirm.).

Best time of day: Early morning around tide change is favoured for manta activity at the cleaning station (Confirm.).

Plankton-rich tidal flows in the mating and feeding season can bring large numbers of mantas feeding in the channel (Confirm.).

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Who it suits

Difficulty (1-5): 2 (moderate)

Physical demand: Descent to about 15-25 m and a mostly stationary wait on sand near the outcrops. Some current management needed but calmer than the outer wall sites.

Accessibility & group fit: Suitable for most certified divers including newer open-water divers with a guide; snorkelers may glimpse mantas near the surface at times.

Options for a mixed group: Groups position along the cleaning-station outcrops; guides stagger divers to avoid crowding the mantas (Confirm.).

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: Within Koror State waters requiring a Rock Islands or dive permit; standard Palau dive rules apply (Confirm.). Fees additional to charter.

Guide / crew: Local divemaster required to position divers and manage current and manta etiquette.

Stay low and still, do not chase or touch mantas, keep clear of the cleaning station so cleaning is not interrupted. Reef-safe sunscreen required under Palau law (Confirm.).

Safety & hazards

Channel current, boat traffic overhead in a working passage, and temptation to crowd mantas. Avoid kicking up the sandy bottom.

Weather / conditions: Tidal current through the channel and reduced visibility on plankton-heavy days; surface chop on the boat run when windy.

Recompression chamber in Koror; operators carry oxygen and first aid (Confirm.). Evacuation by boat to Koror.

Access logistics: Boat from Koror to the Ngemelis area, roughly 45-90 min, or via liveaboard (Confirm.).

Accommodation / camping: No site lodging; base in Koror or on a liveaboard.

Gear / water / connectivity: Full scuba kit; reef hook sometimes used to hold position in current. No connectivity at site.

Facilities: None at the dive site; facilities on the boat and in Koror.

Crowds / solitude: Very popular in manta season with several boats; quieter outside peak months.
