Hinlopen Strait

Also known as: Hinlopenstretet

Best time to dive

June to September; June to August; May to July

What you might see

  • NudibranchLikely

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Certification & difficulty

Advanced Open Water - advanced conditions (currents/depth); dive within your training.

Snorkelling

Snorkel-friendly - Snorkeling with seals/walrus is offered by some Svalbard operators (e.g. Waterproof Expeditions' Snorkel-Dry suits) though not confirmed as a standing Hinlopen-specific program

Safety notes

Pack ice frequently closes the strait ('often difficult to pass due to its thick pack ice' - Oceanwide Expeditions); polar bears (armed guide required on any land excursion); extreme cold/hypothermia risk; very remote with medical evacuation potentially hours away

Permits & fees

All travel/expeditions outside the Longyearbyen management area must be reported to the Governor of Svalbard (Sysselmesteren); insurance and safety/firearm requirements apply for polar-bear country; no site-specific dive permit found

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.
