  • Grey reef sharkLikely
  • Napoleon wrasseLikely

Certification & difficulty

Advanced Open Water - advanced conditions (currents/depth); dive within your training.

Snorkelling

Snorkel-friendly - Yes - Jaco Island is a well-known snorkeling destination with clear water, pink sand, and coral, reached from Valu Beach; close-to-shore snorkeling is considered safer than venturing further out

Safety notes

Strong currents in the strait; crocodile sightings/attacks reported in Timor-Leste coastal waters (regionally cited as roughly one attack per month, about half fatal), so caution advised beyond the immediate shoreline; very remote location with minimal medical facilities

Permits & fees

No formal entrance ticket for casual visitors - access is via an informal boat fee (~$10) from local fishermen at Valu Beach; overnight camping on the island is forbidden as it is considered a sacred site; the island and surrounding reef lie within Nino Konis Santana National Park, and since May 2017 the Timor-Leste government has restricted expedition/liveaboard vessels from anchoring in protected coral reef areas of the park

Permits and operators change - confirm before booking.
