Heavy Oct-Apr surf (site effectively closed), overhead/cave (puka) sections requiring buoyancy control and no-touch discipline, boat traffic near the canyon, potential surge; if monk seals or turtles are encountered, NOAA guidelines require staying back 15m (50ft) from monk seals (45m/150ft from a mother with pup) and 3m (10ft) from sea turtles - do not touch or chase
