Mui Ne (Malibu Beach)
Also known as: Malibu Beach, Mui Ne Point
Really a kitesurf capital with a marginal beginner surf break - small, wind-chopped waves; come for the wind and dunes, not the swell.
Best time to surf
NE monsoon Nov-Apr for waves/wind; surf quality genuinely marginal (peak Oct only ~8% clean); primarily a kitesurf hub
Shoulder season: Poor for surfing (mostly too small or wind-blown); strong for kite/wing (high-wind Nov-Apr)
The wave
Break type: Beach break
Bottom: Sand beach break with sandbar (some structure at nearby point spots)
Wave direction: Lefts and rights on the sandbar; better-organised left-hand rides when the bank is on
Typical wave length: Short - small and chop-affected; not a long wall
Ideal swell: E to NE monsoon wind swell (plus occasional E typhoon swell); small
Ideal wind: Offshore from the WNW; the prevailing NE trade is cross/onshore (great for kite, harder for clean surf)
Working tide: Small beach break works across tides
Difficulty & skill
Difficulty (1-5): 2
Skill level: Beginner-friendly for whitewater/small days; wave-riding here is more onshore/harder than the mellow main beach
Options for a mixed group: Across the bay - beginners on the mellow Ham Tien main beach, wave-riders/kiters at Malibu
Safety & hazards
Near-constant wind-chop in season, current at Malibu, cross-shore wind, possible jellyfish; occasional E typhoon swell events
Phan Thiet - Binh Thuan General Hospital, An Phuoc Hospital; kite-station staff assist on the main beach; emergency 115
Crowd, access & conditions
Crowd & localism: Crowds are never a problem for surf; the water is dominated by kitesurfers; no localism
Access & parking: Malibu less accessible (resort roads on the far side of the village); the main Ham Tien beach is easy with kite-station/resort parking; ~180km from HCMC (SGN)
Surf schools & rental: Muine Local Surf School (since 2014; rental ~150k VND/hr; lessons ~$30/90 min), Surfpoint Vietnam (kite/wing/surf, since 2007), Mui Ne Surf School, kite schools
Water temp & wetsuit: ~24-27 C; boardshorts/rashguard, thin springsuit only on cool windy mornings
Crowds, access and local conditions change - confirm locally before you paddle out.
Around the break
Facilities: Ham Tien main beach well-equipped (kite stations, cafes, showers, resorts); Malibu more remote with resort-front amenities only
For non-surfers: Red and White Sand Dunes (sandboarding), Fairy Stream, Mui Ne fishing village, kitesurfing, Poshanu Cham towers
