Hervey Bay Humpback Whale Watching

The encounter

Species / spectacle: Humpback whales (east-Australian Group V) using sheltered Platypus Bay as a resting and nursery stopover, lingering ~5 days; famed for curious close 'mugging'. Also dolphins, minke, Bryde's and increasing southern right whales; Migaloo occasionally. World's first-designated Whale Heritage Site.

Mid-Jul to early Nov (broader Jun-Nov)

Jul building (quieter), Aug-Sep peak numbers, Oct still frequent (quieter), Nov tapering with late calves. Many operators offer a sighting guarantee (free return trip).

Best time of day: Morning departures (~07:30-08:00) for calmer water; sunset cruises also offered (Confirm. schedules).

Mothers and calves arrive late season - one of few places worldwide where multiple mother-calf pairs gather; early season favours larger adults and swim-with (before calves).

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Physical demand: Boat watching needs no fitness (walk aboard, stand or sit on deck); swim-with needs confident open-water snorkelling holding a surface line.

Accessibility & group fit: Very accessible and family-oriented; wheelchair-accessible vessels available (Whalesong, Quick Cat II, Tasman Venture). Swim-with: under-8s not permitted, confident swimmers only.

Options for a mixed group: For swims only a small number enter the water in staggered rotations while the rest watch aboard (Confirm. per-tour numbers).

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: QLD Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation, enforced by QPWS. Whale caution zone 300 m (vessels <=6 kn inside); no-approach zone 100 m (300 m directly ahead/behind); 3-boat rule; 500 m for predominantly-white whales (Migaloo). Commercial operators need QPWS/Marine Park permits (capped); swim-with under permit, never with calves. Fares only, no separate levy (Confirm. penalties).

Guide / crew: Licensed permitted operators with trained crew; guided marine crew mandatory for swim-with; independent boats must still obey approach-distance rules.

Caution zone 300 m at <=6 kn; no-approach 100 m (300 m fore/aft); person-in-water not within 100 m; drones >=100 m, aircraft >=300 m, helicopters >=500 m; jet skis >=300 m; no chasing or dividing pods; disengage or withdraw if a whale approaches. WCA responsible-watching guidelines and operator training apply.

Seasickness (mitigated by sheltered water) and sun/heat; swim-with adds open-water and cold-water risk.

Weather / conditions: Bay is sheltered behind K'gari so relatively calm; wind/swell can still cause chop and occasional cancellations; seasickness and sun are the main concerns.

Access logistics: Depart Urangan Boat Harbour / Great Sandy Straits Marina; whale grounds in sheltered Platypus Bay off NW K'gari. Brisbane ~282 km / ~3.5 hr, or fly Brisbane-Hervey Bay ~50 min.

Accommodation / camping: Full range in Hervey Bay township (hotels, holiday parks, resorts); camping on K'gari via QPWS permits.

Gear / water / connectivity: Bring sun protection, layers, camera and a motion-sickness remedy; some vessels have WiFi; swim-with gear provided; good mobile coverage near town.

Facilities: Purpose-built whale-watch vessels (saloons, decks, toilets, some with hydrophones); marina with restaurants, cafes, shops and parking.

Crowds / solitude: Busiest Aug-Sep with more vessels; Jul and Oct offer more space; the 3-boat rule and permit cap limit crowding at any one whale.
