Ningaloo Reef Whale Shark Swim
Also known as: Swim with whale sharks Ningaloo/Exmouth, Ningaloo whale shark tour, whale shark snorkel Coral Bay
Seasonal open-ocean snorkel with whale sharks located by spotter plane; strict licensed-operator interaction code.
The encounter
Species / spectacle: Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) seasonal aggregation - one of few places worldwide with reliable near-shore numbers. At Ningaloo generally 2-12 m long. Aggregation tied to a seasonal spike in ocean productivity.
How you see it: Open-ocean snorkel from licensed boat
Typical duration: Full-day tour ~07:00-17:00
When to go
Mar-Jul (most reliable); some years into Aug-Oct
Peak Apr-May; shoulder Mar and Jun-Jul; tapering Aug-Oct. Coral Bay runs Mar-late Jun; Exmouth to ~Aug.
Best time of day: Across daylight once the spotter plane is up; no documented optimal hour.
Trigger: mass coral spawn ~7-10 days after the March/April full moon drives the plankton bloom that draws the sharks.
Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.
Who it suits
Difficulty (1-5): 3 (Moderate)
Physical demand: Open-ocean surface snorkelling, repeated water entries and short finning bursts to keep pace, sometimes in swell/chop. Wetsuits, pool noodles, life jackets, tow-ropes provided; in-water guide tows a rescue float.
Accessibility & group fit: Must swim unassisted and be medically fit; strong-swimmer not required. Operators cater to nervous/first-timers. Min age varies by operator (some from ~4; under 6 usually not permitted to swim unless experienced). Reported guest ages 4-80.
Options for a mixed group: Strong, first-class split. Confident swimmers take timed turns swimming with the shark (max 10 in water); nervous or non-swimming members buy an Observer ticket - stay on the boat, view from deck, and do the calmer inner-reef snorkel/kayak.
Permits & responsible travel
Regulation / permits / fees: Licensed operators only - DBCA (WA Parks and Wildlife) licenses a capped number of whale-shark operators (~15, Confirm.). Two legislated interaction protocols (swimmers and vessels). Spotter planes standard. Private swimming not outright banned but must meet the same separation rules.
Guide / crew: Licensed commercial operator mandatory; dedicated in-water snorkel guide per swim group throughout, towing a rescue float; deck spotter and dive staff aboard.
DBCA code: 250 m approach zone; only one vessel in-contact at a time, max 90 min, speed <=6 kn; second vessel 250 m off, others 400 m; vessels no closer than 30 m. Swimmers: no touch/ride; no closer than 3 m from head/body or 4 m from tail; no flash or extension-pole cameras; no motorised aids; max 10 in water; never swim in front of the shark.
Permits, fees and quotas change - confirm before booking.
Safety & hazards
Open-ocean swimming; sun; seasickness. Other marine life mostly benign; whale shark harmless (filter feeder).
Weather / conditions: Open-ocean swell, chop and currents outside the reef; strong UV; seasickness risk on outer-reef legs; fatigue from repeated entries.
Nearest hospital: Exmouth Health Service, Lyon St (approx -21.9281, 114.1192). Offshore reliance on onboard crew, rescue floats, radio/satellite comms.
Getting there & staying
Access logistics: Two hubs: Exmouth and Coral Bay (~150 km apart), WA Coral Coast, ~1,200+ km north of Perth - remote small towns. Full-day boat tour incl. inner-reef warm-up plus offshore search.
Accommodation / camping: Accommodation in Exmouth and Coral Bay (hotels, caravan parks); not on-water.
Gear / water / connectivity: Snorkel gear and wetsuits provided, flotation aids, food/refreshments, freshwater aboard; mobile coverage limited offshore, marine radio/satellite comms.
Facilities: On boat: deck space, food, freshwater, photographer, sometimes glass-bottom kayaks/SUPs. Hubs: accommodation, dining, dive shops, fuel, tour offices.
Crowds / solitude: Regulated one-vessel-per-shark zone limits in-water crowding; popular in peak season.
Operators & guiding
Nearby operators / hubs: Multiple DBCA-licensed Exmouth/Coral Bay operators; hubs Exmouth and Coral Bay.
Guided trips / outfitters: DBCA-licensed whale-shark tour operators only.
Operators change - confirm current licensing before you book.
