Southern Leyte Whale Sharks

The encounter

Species / spectacle: Wild whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) feeding on natural plankton blooms; Sogod Bay also offers reef diving, walls and other marine life. A recognised Important Shark and Ray Area.

How you see it: snorkel/boat

Typical duration: Boat interaction of up to approx 3 hrs on the water; a half-day including registration at the municipal hall.

When to go

Roughly Nov-May (season formally opens around Oct and closes around end May/Jun); peak plankton months within that window.

Building Nov-Jan; higher Feb-May at peak plankton; closed and no interactions approx Jun-Sep to allow migration. Wild sightings never guaranteed.

Best time of day: Morning slot generally preferred for calmer conditions and light; afternoon slot also offered.

LGU-managed opening/closing of the interaction season; low-key, uncrowded ethical alternative to busier sites.

Sightings are seasonal probabilities, not promises - even in peak season nature does its own thing.

Who it suits

Difficulty (1-5): 2 (moderate)

Physical demand: Surface snorkelling in open water with fins; requires swimming confidence and boat entries. No diving for the interaction. Sea state variable.

Accessibility & group fit: Best for confident swimmers and adventurous travellers; remote setting less suited to those with mobility limits. Small-group friendly.

Options for a mixed group: Two slots daily (morning and afternoon); limited swimmers per boat with a guide plus two spotter boats. Larger groups spread across slots/boats.

Permits & responsible travel

Regulation / permits / fees: LGU-regulated NO-FEEDING interaction; register at Pintuyan Municipal Hall/tourism office with environmental fee and guide/spotter fees (amounts - Confirm.). No feeding, baiting, touching or chasing; outside boats banned if rules are broken.

Guide / crew: Mandatory local guide and spotters from the Pintuyan peoples organisation; registration and briefing required before interaction.

Responsible NO-FEEDING, NO-TOUCH wild model - animals are never fed, baited or conditioned, distinct from provisioned sites. Keep distance, no touching or flash; follow guides and let sharks move freely.

Permits, fees and quotas change - confirm before booking.

Safety & hazards

Open-water snorkelling, currents, boat traffic, sun and seasickness; remoteness limits emergency response. Keep clear of shark tails.

Weather / conditions: Choppy seas, wind and rain in Sogod Bay; trips can be cancelled. Sun and seasickness exposure; remote area weather can shift quickly.

Local boat crew/spotters first response; medical facilities limited - serious cases referred to larger towns/Tacloban. Remote area - low rescue capacity.

Getting there & staying

Access logistics: Fly to Tacloban, then bus/van approx 3 hrs to Sogod, then onward to Pintuyan on Panaon Island (bridge at Liloan); or via Liloan/Lilo-an ferry links. Remote - allow travel time.

Accommodation / camping: Pintuyan Dive Resort and simple lodgings/homestays in Pintuyan; more options around Sogod Bay/Liloan. Basic facilities.

Gear / water / connectivity: Bring or rent snorkel gear, rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen and water; connectivity limited in this remote area.

Facilities: Municipal tourism registration, basic town amenities and dive-resort facilities; limited dining and shops.

Crowds / solitude: Low-volume and uncrowded compared with Donsol/Oslob; often only a few boats. Solitude-friendly ethical option.
